When the Fun-Meter is Empty

“I used to be fun.”

I remember saying this to a friend years ago. Caught in the everyday tasks of caring for young children, I felt bogged down by responsibility and incapable of having – or spreading – joy. Feeling like I was drowning in laundry, meals, and a constant stream of dirty dishes, some days my attitude mirrored that of the toddler temper tantrums I tackled. Allowing circumstances to dictate my attitude, I probably wasn’t very fun to be around.

Looking back at that challenging season, I cannot help but smile – and feel slightly ashamed of myself. Years spent drilling “your attitude makes all the difference” into my children finally seeped into my own spirit.

I had never really lost my “fun”, I had just lost the willingness to find it.

When we’re in difficult seasons, we can get so caught up in our circumstances that we neglect to embrace the simple things that bring us joy. That’s why our next tip is so important:

Tip #7: Choose Joy (& Embrace the Fun)

Over the years, I’ve learned there’s always some fun to be had – even if I must pursue it. When I’m in a difficult season, prioritizing things that bring me joy – even if just for a little while – are a sweet balm for my soul.

Here are some of my favorite ways to bring a little joy into my day:

💚 Music. Belting out a favorite song whether alone or in a group is instant fun-inducing.

💚 Laughing. Whether with a funny book, show, or person, it really is the best medicine.

💚  Going Outside Either taking a walk or just reading on the back porch, being in nature always lightens my mood.

💚 Embracing spontaneity. Just maybe I DO need to stop what I’m doing, grab tacos with a friend and go axe-throwing.

💚 Talking to someone who brings out the best in me. It could be a friend or family member. You know this person for you – the one that is perpetually positive and always encouraging. You feel lighter and happier after being around them. Bonus points if they make you laugh.

What about you? Are you fun? (I can’t help asking this.. haha!)

Does your attitude depend on your circumstances?

What are some ways that you cultivate fun in your life? Consider making a list and referring to it on days when you need a little extra encouragement.

A cheerful heart is good medicine
