What’s playing on repeat?
Do any of these sound familiar?
“I’m a failure.”
“I’m a disappointment.”
“I’m weak.”
“I’m nothing.”
Or maybe you hear “I’m all by myself. I’m unlovable. I’m not good enough.”
We all have lies we hear in our minds, sometimes on constant replay. These lies are accusations, not from God, but whispers straight from the serpent’s mouth.
We don’t have to accept those thoughts as truth. God has given us a weapon — His Word.
Here’s how to do that using the lies above:
The fear – I’m a failure.
The truth – The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand. Psalm 37:23-24
The fear – I’m a disappointment.
The truth – The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love, he will exalt over you with loud singing. Zephaniah 3:17
The fear – I’m weak.
The truth – But he said to me, “my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
The fear – I’m nothing.
The truth – And because we are his children, God has sent the spirit of his son into our hearts, prompting us to call out “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave, but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir. Galatians 4:6-7
When these lies and fears overtake your mind, recognize them for what they are. They are the enemy’s most convenient way to stop each of us from wholeheartedly following Jesus.
Ephesians 6:10-17 describes the armor of God. Verse 17 says “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
The sword of the spirit is the word of God. Scripture. Truth.
This sword serves as the ONLY weapon of offense in the believer’s spiritual armor. He gave us scripture to equip us for battle. And scripture doesn’t just defend us — it reminds us of who we are.
Fear is a powerful enemy of our faith, because it prevents God from using us in all the ways He wants to for His kingdom.
When those thoughts whisper in your mind, don’t let them define you. Go to God’s Word. Fill your heart with what is true.
Then answer them.
You are delighted in.
You are held in His hand.
You are chosen.
You are His beloved child.
Take Time to Pause
- What lie do you need to replace with God’s Truth?
- When the lie comes, will you choose to speak Scripture over yourself instead of believing it?
