Are Your Eyes Open Today?
“Sweetheart, I need you to talk to me.” My husband requests as he stares out the window at the dark road before him.
Out of words and ready to rest, I reply, “What do you want me to say?” “Anything! I need you to keep me awake,” he pleads.
This conversation has occurred so many times in our marriage that I should probably have a plan of what I’d say or easy go-to conversations. Instead, I’m usually barely staying awake myself and struggling to find the right words to help bring us home safely.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the importance of staying awake. Not physically, although perimenopause does keep me up a lot more than usual, but I’ve been thinking about it spiritually. When Jesus took Peter up on the mountain for the transfiguration and to show him more of who He was as Messiah, Peter and the disciples were sleepy. It wasn’t until they were fully awake that they saw Jesus’ glory.
“Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.” Luke 9:32 NIV
And then when Jesus is predicting His return in Mark 13. He urges his disciples that since no one will know the date or time, they are to stay awake.
“And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.” Mark 13:37 ESV
Friends, I don’t know about you, but I want to be awake enough like Peter on the mountain to see God’s glory and not to miss His presence and what He is doing in this world.
I want to heed Jesus’ warning and remain spiritually awake, so that I am ready to witness God’s power and participate in His plan!
And like my husband who needed someone to help him stay awake, I believe we all need a little reminder sometimes to stay awake. So, I urge you to encourage one another to keep your eyes open to the Presence and the Power of God’s movement in this world!
Let’s stay awake together ❤
