By the river, I found peace
The water glistened and the leaves rustled in the wind. Sitting on a branch overlooking the river, I gazed at the stillness of what is typically a fast-flowing river. My heart longed to experience such peace.
A break from the turbulence and the pace of the world. A pause from the chaos. Silence and serenity would be a gift amidst the dissenting voices fighting for my attention.
My mind, my body, and my spirit yearned for tranquility – to hear only the sound of my heartbeat and breath, like the whisper of the wind between the leaves.
My heart cried out, Lord, meet me here. You are my peace. You are my joy.
“Stillness is the quiet space where God migrates from the periphery back to the center, and prayer pours forth from the life that has God at the center.”
(Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools, p.44)
Perhaps like me, you’ve had enough of the striving. The confusion and division in this world leave you feeling tired and weary. You long for a reprieve from the never-ending noise. You long for peace.
On the bank of that river, I surrendered control to the One who holds my life, the God of peace who “directs my heart into His love and perseverance.”
Because when I am still, I remember that all is well with my soul, and I find rest in the hope of God’s love.
You can do the same. Stillness provides a space for God to move back to the center of your life. Today make an intentional choice to still your mind and body and find peace for your soul.
May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.
2 Thessalonians 3:5
