Learning to Let Go

Eight bags lined the hallway outside my four daughters’ bedrooms. Tired of living in a constant state of clutter, the girls decided to clean out their closet and purge some clothes. Before they could discern what should stay and what should go, they covered every corner of their bedroom floor with shirts, pants, dresses, shoes, and accessories. The mess magnified this otherwise simple chore into what felt like a monumental undertaking. Before they could restore peace and order, a plethora of items had to go.

Letting go is hard work.

As I watched them, I realized that I knew what they didn’t. This was only just the beginning of what would be a lifetime of learning to let go…

A decluttering session, a job change, a child going off to college, a loss of a dream, a move to a different state, or the death of a loved one – life is full of moments of letting go. Many of which are accompanied by a mess of emotions. But if you’re willing to sort through the clutter in your heart during these seasons of change, you might just find that on the other side of letting go, there is room for beauty and peace.
