Life or Death: The Power of What We Speak
My friend’s face conveyed shock and hurt. The careless, harsh comment I tossed her direction landed like a grenade in the middle of our friendly lunch. Justification was futile. The damage was already done. The shrapnel from my words cut right through to my friend’s heart.

I threw open the garage door and stared at my husband. He had an early flight but was working on a project late into the night. His suitcase still unpacked, he looked up, bracing himself for the onslaught of my words. I took a breath, waited a moment, and asked him how I could help him get ready. Relief washed over his face as he relaxed and welcomed my offer of assistance.

Have you ever thought about the power of the tongue, words spoken or written?
Scripture compares it to a rudder. Such a small part, yet it determines the course of the entire ship.
Every day, we have the opportunity to use our words for good or evil. A careless, quick-tempered, or gossipy remark can lead to destruction. A thoughtful, encouraging, or gentle response can bring healing. Which will you choose?
Think over your recent interactions with others. Did your words bring hope or heartache?
This week, take a quiet moment each evening to reflect with the Lord: “Did my words today build up or tear down?”
Let His grace shape tomorrow’s words into life-giving ones.
The tongue has the power of life and death,
and those who love it will eat its fruit.
