Empty Promises
After a long day of hiking, our canteens were empty and our bodies yearned for rest and replenishment. We passed a sign on the path labeled “Spring” with an arrow pointing to a spur trail through the woods.
Water from a cold, clean mountain spring was just the thing our tired bodies craved. A few from our group followed the sign promising fresh water only to find the trail overgrown and difficult to navigate. Determined, they pressed forward until the trail completely disappeared with no signs of a spring. They returned emptied handed and still in need of refreshment for the journey ahead.
We all have signs that point us to things that promise replenishment and satisfaction. This product, this job, this house, this “thing” promises to lead us to what we’ve been searching for all along. However, we quickly discover that the thing that was surely promised still leaves us feeling empty.
You will seek me and find me
when you seek me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:13
God promises that we can find Him when we seek Him wholeheartedly. Unlike a sign pointing the way to an empty promise, we can trust God’s promises because He is faithful. Seeking Him with our whole heart will lead us to a spring of living water that never runs dry.
