Is it supposed to be so confusing?
If you’ve ever picked up a Bible, read a few passages, and quietly set it back down feeling confused or frustrated… you’re not alone.
Scripture can feel hard to understand. Some stories are complex. Some passages challenge our modern thinking. And sometimes we’re left wondering, “What in the world does this even mean?”
Here’s the good news: You don’t need a seminary degree or special training to understand God’s Word. You just need an open heart and a willingness to let the Holy Spirit speak to you through what you read.
“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” Hebrews 4:12
Scripture is the primary way that God reveals Himself to us. While His nature is beyond our full understanding, in His grace He chose to make Himself known through His Word, and ultimately through Jesus.
We learn God’s character by watching what Jesus did, listening to what He said, and choosing to follow Him wholeheartedly. And when we do, it changes everything.
If you’re stepping into reading Scripture, or returning to it, here are a few helpful tools:
1. Use a study Bible.
The notes and cross-references provide historical context and explanation that can bring clarity to confusing passages. They’re especially helpful when you find yourself thinking “I’m not sure what this means.”
2. Be part of a Bible-believing community.
We were never meant to walk out our faith alone. Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Surrounding yourself with other believers helps you discern truth, ask questions safely, and grow in understanding. If you’re not currently connected, consider visiting a local church and joining a small group to go deeper in fellowship and study. We all need friendships that point us to truth when the world desperately wants to point us away from it.
3. Explore trusted resources like The Bible Project.
The Bible Project offers accessible videos that explain biblical themes and show how the entire story of Scripture points to Jesus. The series on How to Read the Bible is especially helpful when you’re starting out or feeling stuck.
If reading the Bible has felt intimidating, don’t give up. Keep showing up and opening it up. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you.
God is not hiding from you. He delights in being known.
