When you feel like staying home

“You’re awfully quiet tonight,” my friend said from across the table as we waited for our Thursday night Bible study to begin.

He was used to me teaching and helping with events like this one—and even as a participant, I’m rarely short on words.

But this evening was different.

I had almost convinced myself to stay home.

There was a list of unfinished tasks waiting for me, and my emotional bandwidth had already been spent on parenting that day.

So while I was there physically, I felt emotionally and spiritually disconnected.

But something shifted.

By the end of the evening, I was laughing with friends—reminded of God’s faithfulness through His Word—and overflowing with renewed hope.

I could have easily stayed home.

But I’m so thankful I chose community over isolation.

“Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another…”

Hebrews 10:24–25

This is exactly why we’re reminded in Hebrews not to give up on gathering together.

Because when life gets hard, our instinct is often to withdraw.

But that’s exactly when we need each other the most.

Thoughts to Ponder:

  • What is your natural response when life feels overwhelming—do you lean toward community or isolation?

  • What is one intentional step you can take this week to gather with others and encourage one another in your faith?
