Big search this fall.. are you in?
Perusing the racks in a clothing store, a shirt caught my eye. Delicately embroidered, I wondered if the pretty design would be something my daughter would like. I pulled it out to get a better look.
“There are great things coming your way.”
“Things are lining up for you.”
“You’re surrounded by good energy.”
I slid the shirt back into the pile. This wasn’t something I wanted to bring home. Much like the sugar packet, I had found another example of feel-good sayings that sounded pleasant but lacked any real depth or truth.
Rosemary and I spoke recently about how a little bit of truth mixed in with a lie can be much harder to detect. And we live in a world filled with half-truths, partial truths, and carefully crafted narratives. With so many voices telling us what’s true, it can be difficult to know what to believe.
Thankfully, in His great love and mercy, God has not left us to figure it out on our own.
1. We can ask God for wisdom.
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
James 1:5
2. Jesus is the Truth.. we don’t have to look elsewhere.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
3. His truth sets us free.
Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:31b-32
His truth frees us from sin, condemnation, and death—and from the lies that so easily entangle us.
4. His truth frees us from the pressure to be “good enough.”
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:29-30
We don’t have to spend our lives trying to prove ourselves worthy of God through our own efforts. The burden of trying to be “good enough” on our own is heavy. But when we trust God’s grace and allow Him to do His work in us, we can let go of that striving and experience the lighter burden Jesus offers.
So how do we recognize truth when we encounter it? How do we sort through the half-truths, opinions, and messages that surround us every day?
We dig into God’s Word. We ask questions. We listen to one another. And we seek the truth together.
Do you want to know God’s truth? Do you want to talk about hard things with other believers and dig into what HIS truth actually says?
