Feeling drained? Try this instead…
Dashing across the parking lot, I ran into the building and slid into the room just as things were starting. Having risen early after a week of busy days and late nights, I had arrived at a local children’s mission to volunteer for the day.
If I’m honest, I didn’t really want to be there. My heart wasn’t in it.
I was running on empty amidst the hustle and bustle of the busy holiday season. “Why did I sign up for this,” I grumpily said to myself as I listed off all the things I could get done in the hours I would be there.
Soon, waves of children came through the doors, some shyly clinging to their loved ones, others boldly approaching the adults there to help. What they all had in common was their excitement and joy; it was palpable.
Watching them, my heart lifted. The “to-do” list faded and my misaligned spirit gladdened. Helping those right in front of me for the next few hours shifted my focus away from myself as I relished the delight of others.
Our last tip for Living Intentionally and Focusing Eternally during hard seasons is found here:
Tip #10 – See Beyond Yourself
When we take the time and look for simple ways to help someone else, in times of our deepest needs it reminds us that we are not alone in the struggle and gives our current situation needed perspective.
There are many ways to do this—whether it’s volunteering your time, writing a note of encouragement, listening with compassion to someone who needs to talk, surprising a neighbor with kindness, or even taking a simple walk to shift your perspective.
When was the last time you were able to look beyond your own struggles and bless someone else? This week, ask the Lord to show you one simple way to serve or encourage someone around you. As you do, notice how He tenderly shifts your perspective and lifts your spirit in the process.
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.
