What are you guarding?
As I turned the corner, a familiar shape swooped down to a patch of green grass nearby. Red-chested, with a dark head and bright beak, the robin’s sharp eyes tracked my every step.
Each day, he took up this same position as I walked by. I was in his territory and he stood guard, protecting his nesting area and making sure I kept my distance.
The watchful robin diligently protected his nest.
It made me wonder: what do I protect with that kind of tenacity?
Immediately, a verse came to mind: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)
Our hearts are certainly worth protecting. As the wellspring of life, everything we do flows from them. Guarding our hearts means being mindful of our thoughts, influences, desires, and emotions – because what takes place within us shapes our actions and ultimately determines the direction of our lives.
Guarding our hearts isn’t passive. It requires intentional vigilance against destructive influences, negative patterns, and temptation.
God used that robin as a simple but powerful reminder: pay attention to what you allow into your mind through your eyes and ears – what you watch, what you listen to, and what you dwell on.
Like the robin protecting his nest, may we guard our hearts—the center of our spirit and conscience—with the same focus and care.
And as we guard our hearts, may we fix our eyes ahead, trust His direction, and walk confidently in the path He has set before us.
Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it.
Proverbs 4:23 NIV
Thoughts to Ponder:
- Are my daily choices helping guard my heart, or leaving it unprotected?
- What is one action I can take to intentionally guard my heart this week?
